The Calgary Stampede Showband, in conjunction with the Calgary Marching Show Band Association (CMSBA), cordially invites the members of the Southwood Seniors (55 Plus) Club to our annual spring performance, Music ‘N Motion, a celebration of the achievements of musical excellence fostered by marching band activity across Western Canada. The show will start at 2:00 PM on Sunday, May 27, at McMahon Stadium, and will provide an early-season opportunity for bands to perform their field shows in a collegial, supportive atmosphere.

The Showband and the CMSBA strongly believe that music is a gift for all in the community and, as such, have set aside a limited number of complimentary (free) tickets for select members of the community to attend. If your members would like to be a part of our audience, please call 403.261.9318 or e-mail sgrant@calgarystampede.com no later than Tuesday, May 23. Be sure to indicate the number attending. Please note: These tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and, after May 23, will only be available at the Stadium box office at a cost of $15 per ticket, so contact us soon!

HAYSBORO PARADE OF GARAGE SALES MAY 26, 2012!

Haysboro is planning a community PARADE OF GARAGE SALES on Saturday, May 26, 2012.

The sales will be between 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 pm. It’s a go, rain or shine!!!

Meander through the community to find several garage sales and treasures galore!

Maps will be available at the Haysboro Hall (1204 – 89th Ave S.W.) the morning of the sales.

Haysboro can be found between McLeod Trail (East Border) and 14th Street SW (West Border), as well as Heritage Drive (North Border) and Southland Drive (South Border).

ART Project for Anderson LRT Park.

Southwood Community Association ART Project for Anderson LRT Park.

Southwood is participating in an existing worldwide participatory art project called Inside Out-Group Action: www.insideoutproject.net. You are invited to have a simple black and white portrait of yourself made into a poster and installed in Anderson LRT Park.

Portraits will be taken at Southwood Community Association events in May and June or you may submit your own. Please see www.southwoodconnects.ca for more information and details on how to submit your photo.

Your portrait must be accompanied by a $20 donation to cover the cost of printing and a signed waiver form. There are a limited number of sponsored posters if there is financial need.

Volunteers will be needed for installation day at the Family Fun Date and BBQ at the Anderson LRT Park on July 28. Please contact dothome@shaw.ca for more information and to give your name as a volunteer for this event..

Citizens’ input wanted for Macleod Trail Corridor Study

Transportation Planning is conducting a long-term transportation corridor study for Macleod Trail from 25th Ave. S. to Anderson Road. The study will update the 1968 Functional Planning Report and align it with the 2009 Calgary Transportation Plan and the land use planning initiatives in the area.

The City is engaging with communities, businesses and travellers in the area to help identify the most significant issues and shape future transportation plans along the corridor. From April 23 to May 4, 2012, an online survey will be available at www.calgary.ca/macleod for citizens to provide feedback on the corridor and help identify the top priority issues. We encourage you and members of your community to fill out the survey. Signs will be placed along

The Macleod Trail Corridor Study is considered a long-term planning study. It will ensure plans for the Macleod Trail aligns with the CTP, which classifies this section of Macleod Trail as an Urban Boulevard, and a primary transit, primary cycling and primary high occupancy vehicle (HOV) route.

The study will also identify transportation requirements along the corridor to support the 2009 Municipal Development Plan, which envisions the adjacent land use to intensify into an Urban Corridor with retail, office, mixed-use and residential uses. The study will consider community access, walking, cycling, transit, roadway operations and safety along this section of Macleod Trail.

Currently, this section of Macleod Trail is not identified on the Transportation Infrastructure Investment Plan (TIIP) list for funding. Corridor studies are typically completed 10 to 30 years in advance of construction to identify issues such as how much room is needed and to determine upgrades to existing roadways. Further study is typically required before the corridor plan is implemented. As the study progresses, we will conduct further community engagement and will be in touch with you regarding that process.

Southwood Youth Action June 2nd 1:00-2:30

What Is This?

A group where youth can address ways to improve their neighbourhood, city or country by making changes on an issue they care about!

Who is it for?

Youth between 12 – 17 who: want to get experience, are interested in social justice, want to volunteer or just want to help their community be a better place.

Time and Place:

Our first official meeting will be at the Southwood Community Centre (11 Sackville Drive SW) on June 2^nd 2012 from 1:00-2:30.

Need & Preference studies – East and South Areas

Community needs and preference studies form the backbone of the strategic planning process for community associations in Calgary. Within a geographic community they are undertaken to determine residents’ perceived needs and desires for the delivery of recreation, leisure and social programming. They are used to inform the individual community association as to their relevance in the community and the possible changes that may be made to enhance or improve that profile. Specifically, the survey is designed to determine awareness, use and expectations of the community association’s programs and services as well as possible barriers to use of them.

The City of Calgary’s Community & Neighbourhood Services (CNS) has conducted community needs and preferences surveys in recent years in conjunction with Community Associations. The City of Calgary, CNS is undertaking some studies of several geographic communities, creating multiple subsets of analysis.

Your geographic area community has been selected this year for a needs and preference study. The information received by CNS will be available to share with communities in the New Year. This information will be able to help your community make decisions and develop a Business Plan.
